If you drop dilute hydrochloric acid on the mineral aragonite, it bubbles. ?

Hydrochloric acid will react with carbonates to give off CO2 gas, probably the bubbles you are seeing. Note: HCl will react with some metal sulfides (such as PbS) to give H2S, but this reaction is not as vigorous.
