Can I leave the airport in between flights (domestic USA)?

That will not be a problem. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get through security so you don't miss your flight. My suggestion is for your friends to come to the airport to visit you and you can hang out at a restaurant. That way you don't have to worry about traffic and whether or not the MARTA is running late.
